The Academy Awards

Salute and congratulations to one of the best actors ever lived, Peter O’Toole, who had just won this year’s Oscar HONORARY AWARD. It’s about time for the much overdue recognition from the Academy.

Atypical Pneumonia

Upon calling a few parants of Alec’s classmate tonight, we found out a few things…

Many classmates are already skipping classes in worry of catching the Atypical Pneumonia, which has already killed 10 people here in Hong Kong upto this date. Yet a few classmates are still going to school with at least a common cold! To hell I’d let Alec going to classes sitting beside a kid with a cold these days!

The school, apparantly, had already told the formmasters last week to start contacting parants that students do not need to go to school should the parants choose not to. We haven’t receive such a message.

Primary school students do not know how to use medical masks properly. Even if they did, they’d have to take them off during lunch hour… so much for the protection.

UPDATE (2003-03-25 00:00): One Primary 6 student from Alec’s school has been confirmed with the Atypical Pneumonia for about a week already!

Cable TV Hong Kong

Just asked Cable TV to have my descrambler switched to a digital one. When placing the order, Cable TV insisted that they do not have digital in our area yet. I then pushed them for it since I am paying as much monthly fees as those who have digital descrambler (in some cases even HKD$100 more), and that they get quite a few more channels then I. Otherwise, I would like to cancel my subscription for it is simply too expensive.

After almost 15 minutes with them over the phone, Cable TV then let us in on a deal of HKD$238 monthly fees (instead of the regular HKD$298) if we subscribed to the Star Movie channel at the same time for HKD$80 per month. In that case, they’ll install a digital descrambler for us! So, they do have digital in our area after all. Why are companies in Hong Kong such a drag? All I wanted was simply switching to digital for the extra channels, and I’d be happy to keep paying the same monthly fees of HKD$298 even knowing some others are only paying HKD$198 per month for it. Yet they have to make me force them to have it canceled all together before they’d let me do so.

At any rate, after watching National Geographic’s Adventure One channel for a few days, I find it alone is well worth the entire monthly subscription. Now, if somehow CNN, BBC, and CNBC would only show the other side of the story in Iraq… I am happy with CCTV 9 news for now.

HP Officejet 6110 Multifunction all-in-one Printer

HP Officejet 6110

I have bought this machine just 2 weeks ago. At HKD$2980, it is not a bad deal at all. Computer printing and scanning, and stand-alone photocopying and faxing all work very well. The only function that this machine is missing is outbound computer faxing, ie. no fax modem.

First impression on a photocopy of a fashion advertisement from a fashion magazine is simply awesome! Auto descreening, and almost no “see through” effect due to thin original.

Scanning size is just a little over A4, but, as opposed to all “Broadway/Fortress” salesmen claimed, with the build-in automatic cut sheet feeder, just like the fax function, it *can* photocopy F4 (A4 long/legal/full scrap) size paper. Just goes to show what salesmen know about the products they sell.

Initial setup is just the same as a regular fax machine with option settings in the photocopy set of things.

Printing quality with the No.57 3 color ink cartridge and the No.56 black ink cartridge is every bit as good as my old Deskjet 970Cxi if not better. However, the result with the optional No. 58 photo ink cartridge installed in place of the No. 56 black ink cartridge was surprisingly poor. The outcome with the photo cartridge was too light, too yellow and the highlight areas are all washed out. Also, the photo ink cartridge does not work nearly as good on plain paper as not using it. Without the photo cartridge, plain paper printing is very nice.

All in all, it is a very good machine. Perfect for those school paper copying and regular photo printing.

Photography

“Plan”

What is a “plan” in photography? How does one plan to take a photograph? Does one plan to use which lens/equiptment by the subject, or does one plan by the outcome of the image?…
