A numbers of us have been discussing in a local newsgroup on the views of wearing medical masks during this active period of the SARS epidemic. Several webbers have stressed the importance of a mask in protecting oneself and others. Others have suggested the possible health hazards on wearing one. While some stressed that wearing a mask or not is simply a personal choice.
Here is my view…
I don’t care if others chooses not to wear a mask, I’ll just protect myself the best I know how. Those who choose not to, and want to stress on the health issues and hazards on wearing one, please do so knowledgeably; but don’t try to make it a human rights issue like what Dr. Tse seems to have suggested towards the end of her TV advertisement, in which I have commented on earlier. Had she forgo that last remark, and instead warn us about the possible health hazards on wearing a mask, then I wouldn’t have any issue with her ad.
As to Dr E K Yeoh, Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, who earlier stated in a news conference that he deliberately not to wear a mask in argue that others who do wear one are destroying the image of the region and exaggerating the situation, I ask, Dr. Yeoh, just what has your not wearing a mask got to do with others’ lives, or image as you so tried to put it?! If you wish to play chicken with the virus, do so on your own quietly at your own risks, but never with the stakes of others’ health to say the least. By suggesting your not wearing a mask deliberately is for the good of us, image or otherwise, you have failed miserably.
Locals consider the 3m 8210 N95 medical mask the “Rolls Royce” of masks, but personal experience is that it truly is difficult to breath wearing the 8210 properly. If you choose to wear a 8210, I suggest not to talk so much. Don’t run, exersice, or drive with the 8210 on - choose another model, and keep the car windows opened.
In doing my part to help fight the virus, I wear a medical mask to protect others as I have no way of knowing whether I have caught it and contagious or not; and I wash my hands, shawer, and change my clothes often to protect myself.
What do you do?
