There has been complaints in the email circulation that the name SARS - Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome is being used widely, whilst it is too simpler to the name of the region, the HKSAR - Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Accusations have it that the term SARS is a prank that the originator made up intended to hurt the region’s image by suggesting indirectly that the virus may have originated here.
Whether the origin of the term had such implications or others are using the term widely is not an issue. An acronym is just an acronym. It is whether we have such intends in our own hearts that matter. Personally, I just find the whole issue amusing. I couldn’t care less whether there is any truth to it. Just like I didn’t care the Apple Mac factory lines had “I Build Mac” logo’s on their uniforms. I doubt if IBM - International Business Machines sees that as any substantial threat either.
Oh, and ahhhh SCMP….
it is SARS not Sars, just as it is not Scmp.
WhaUSay?!
