It Takes Time to Share

I have successfully shared the HP OJ6110 printer hooked up on one Win XP computer on my home network with another Win XP notebook on the same network via a Wi-Fi setup. That took no time. However, another notebook with Win ME on the same network via the same Wi-Fi setup took me just over 2 hours to do.

Apparently, the Win ME notebook needed an ME version of the printer driver and could not be loaded from the Win XP computer where the printer was hooked up, like the other notebook with Win XP did, since the ME version of the printer driver have never been installed. However, setting up the Win ME printer driver was not as easy as it seems. As there is no way to have the Win ME version installed onto the Win XP computer, I thought I could install them locally on the Win ME notebook and then point to the installed folder when the share printer installation needed the files, but to no avail as the installed folder was not a shared one. I tried to point the installation to the HP printer CD-ROM but they could not be found. I think it is because they are zipped.

Finally I figured out I have to first move all (some 15 of them) the Win ME version of the printer files from the notebook to the shared folder. Then I was supposed to tell the shared printer that I have to share it with computers using Win ME instead of Win XP OS. When the installation asked for the printer driver files, I just pointed it to the shared folder for the files, and that fixed the whole problem.
