Bayesian Filtering has pretty much nailed half of the spam problem (i.e. sorting out spam and ham) for good. Learn all about Bayesian Filtering from http://www.paulgraham.com/antispam.html
Yes, the junk filter in Mozilla is an implementation of the Bayesian filter.
Not that Mozilla’s Junk Mail Control is not good; it works well, but it is not good enough. I get close to about 30-40 spam email a day. Mozilla or Thunderbird’s Junk Mail Control pretty well took care of 98% of them, which is better than what I’d expected.
The trouble is, when I get that many spam a day with just a few legit emails, I would still have to sort through the filtered email, mark them read to make sure no legit email got mistakenly filtered out, and then delete them.
It would be nice to have a spam database marching utility to first match up all my emails with the spam database before downloading , delete all the known spam, leave out the legit emails with the rest of the unknown emails, and then let Junk Control to go through them.
Bayesian filter sorts messages by looking for recognized patterns of keywords. The stock BF doesn’t understand Chinese, and for the lack of spaces and different punctuations any Chinese text would look like an odd stream of data. A customized word splitter for Chinese words to divide text into words and phrases is necessary for a the Mozilla junk filter to work adequately.
The thing is, I hardly ever receive any Chinese email from someone I know. Nearly all the Chinese emails I receive are just spam, so the BF for Mail.App works well enough for me. I get to see about 5-10 spams a day, including stuff that comes into a couple of NPC account.
As long as false positive (i.e. ham classifed as spam) is possible, letting a bot to delete your email is just too dangerous. As for your annoyance about downloading spam, well I did say BF nailed half of the problem.
Folks are still working on the other half of the problem. Noticable proposals are http://www.benzedrine.cx/relaydb.html and http://www.martiansoftware.com/articles/spammerpain.html . I am reluctant to install these on mother, ‘cos it would affect too many people if anything goes wrong.
Understandably so. That’s why I haven’t installed anything either.
Thanks for the info.
