Students Boycott Classes

In protesting the Financial Secretary’s plan to cut the education budget, students at the Polytechnic University are preparing to boycott classes next Tuesday.

Everyone has a right to voice their opinions. Methods used to do so however define the character. Boycotting classes is so unconstructive. If students opt to cut classes, why not stop schools all together so no one needed to pay for anything and therefore the budget problem is moot.

Students could otherwise choose to go for a sitting at school on a Saturday or Sunday when there are no classes, which would get the same media attention, and they could either just sit quietly to make a point or to discuss the matter further for either the purpose of learning or to brainstorm a workable solution.

That said, I know I would have wanted a break from school myself. Democracy rules!

Meteor Shower

The Leonid meteor shower is coming with the occurrence maxima on the 14th of November this year.

RTFP

I have been contributing to an education fund for Alec for several years now. Every time it comes to the annual payment, I have to have the lump sum saved up and it takes some discipline to do so. One could opt to pay biannually or monthly instead but biannually would cancel out the interests earnings and the interest payment, and with monthly payments one would lose all the interest earnings plus a hefty interest payment.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a credit card benefit pamphlet from the sister company of the insurance company saying that a card holder can now pay any insurance/fund contributions by credit card with a 6 month “interest free” installments.

Sounds too good to be true, and it is. I read through the entire pamphlet and discovered that there is a service charge to the “interest free” payment, which works out to be about 3% fixed charges.

So, make sure you Read the Fine Print before you sign anything.
