Need more time to get a full grasp on what the raw conciousness blog did. I kept missing the late afternoon for shotting the same shot in ISO800 and ISO1600, since f8.0 and 1/1000s at those speed would be over-exposed.
So far, I find that over-exposing a shot is definately not the way to go. In fact, a normal shot with the auto setting is generally over-exposed by 2/3 EV – 1 EV when measured along side a light exposure meter. In other words, ISO 800 at the auto setting shutter and aperature combo is actually about ISO400 – ISO600, but since the resulting shot is over-exposed by that amount, a -EV compensation would give you that said ISO rating which corresponds the film setting.
The only problem with it so far is purple fringing on the back-lid edges. Otherwise, the camera as a whole is very good.
Mugen brand batteries sells for around $130 each works very well. I bought 2 of them with the Fuji one that came with the camera at $100ea. I’d say just one extra should be enough to get you through the day.
Memory is another matter. About 170 shots per 256MB at 6MPix is not bad, but only about 3-1/2 minutes of 640X480 30fps movie is not quite enough.
The problem w/ having to resort to working on RAW is then you have a dilemma: whether to shoot RAW all the time or not. That 256M card (HK$800! from Cheer Power, Central) doesn’t store all that many 12M files.
Shoot JPG for convenience, RAW for the odd important shots only, which wouldn’t be a whole lot for me if snap shots were all I’d ever shoot with the F700. Besides, RAW or not SR or not purple fringing would always be there. So think I wouldn’t be bothered with the chores the get at added dynamic range; just the much less video noise alone is a big gain enough for me.
$730 for a Fuji 256MB xD, $700 if purchased with the camera.
