What a Mistake

I am not a fan of Tereasa Tang.

Over the years, many audiophiles and others praised over Tereasa’s voice and I didn’t think it was that special. The other day, my friend Roy said that his dad wanted a good sounding recording of Tereasa Tang and Roy thought he’d bought a really well recorded CD for his dad, yet his dad still didn’t like it. When I told Roy about JVC’s XRCD re-mastering process and that he should try buying Tereasa’s CD in XRCD format, he asked me to go with him and show him at the shop next time.

Today, I probably made the biggest purchasing mistake of a CD in my whole life. I thought I’d buy this Tereasa XRCD and have a listen for myself just to see how good she really is.

I have no doubt in the XRCD re-mastering quality as I have heard numerous XRCD’s and know the quality well enough. However, when I play the Tereasa’s XRCD, I think I have heard one of the worse recordings. I think the problem was in the master so no re-mastering in the world could change the poor recording. Then there is Tereasa’s voice. I have always thought she did not have enough “air” to sing her songs. While that remains true, her performance was also very overrated. She may have what others considered a nice sounding “voice”, but that nice sounding voice did not come with good singing ability. Along with the usual Hong Kong quality (or the lack of it) recording, no after work anyone could have done could change a wild chicken into a phoenix. Very disappointing… or I should say to myself – I told you so.

Fortunately, the consolation for the day is:
Lang Lang Live at Carnegie Hall, Valen Hsu’s in XRCD, Faye Wong’s XRCD, and Tsai Chin’s XRCD all sounded excellent!

Call me schizophrenic, but I am just not the “herd of sheep” type; I also think Lang Lang is a much better pianist than that robot like Yundi kid.
