The QCool OTG

QCool1.jpg

It is a flash memory card reader/harddisk case/digital photo bank.

While still waiting for the Nikon CoolWalker to come out, I wasn’t going to get a digital photo bank just yet. I needed an external HD case as my old one for 3.5″ HD stopped working. A replacement would cost some where around HKD $150-$230. Nice thing would be I have spare 3.5″HD. Bad thing is, most need external power.

Upon checking out some of the external cases for 2.5″HD, which runs anywhere from HKD $45-$200, I came across the Transcend StoreJet 40GB for HKD$1300 gray marketed goods or HKD$1950 dealer goods. The case is very small, smart looking and slick. But I thought the 1.8″ HD that came with the StoreJet comes at a premium and that it costs too much for a ext HD. So, I chose the QCool instead.

Suspended With Salary

You might think one could get away with this for two months every year for summer vacations indefinitely…

Fool them once, shame on him.
Fool them twice, shame on her.
Fool them three times, makes a jackass out of himself and pisses her off.

Either way he wins. Severence pay for contract termination could be enough to pay off some debts. The reason for no one else dares to touch such a vicious tardy person could easily be turned and explained by other means towards his own advantages just like the way he explained his previous exits.

Smart plan indeed. But now, the truth is out. Too bad his reasons ain’t the truth and no one actually shuts him up permanently. He is still yapping his way through freely.

Print to PDF

Last week, Tin showed me his PowerMac being able to print documents into PDF files. He then led me to a site which supposedly has a software that can do the same for PC. Unfortunately, for some unknown reasons, the installation went fine but the printout did not.

Actual PDF file can be downloaded here.

I just found another freeware that does just the job. PrimoPDF. It works with Word (haven’t checked other software yet) and be able to print Chinese as well with options to print for screen PDF or printer PDF. Aside from the hyperlink created with Word that doesn’t work in the PDF file, everything else seems to work quite nicely.

Best of all, no watermarks.

Update (03/08/04): Shortly after I posted this message, PrimoPDF’s website went down for a few days. I have just checked and it is back up now. I’ve also found Go2PDF, which is another virtual printer kind of PDF file creater. I haven’t tested this myself, so do your own test.

Cumberportables

Many so called portable devices today are not quite so portable. Take the QCool OTG that I bought yesterday for instance. It might be one of the smallest 2.5″ HD digital album in the market for a mere HK$690 plus any 2.5″HD one so desire. The case itself is well built with aluminum alloy. It comes with CF, MD, SD, MMC, MS (pro/duo), SM, and xD compatible with a CF adapter card reader, a 1200mAh battery claimed to have a 2hr charge, a snuck pouch, a tiny worldwide power adapter, and a USB cable.

The problem is, if one wanted to use it as a portable HD just like any one of the slick USB/1394 external 2.5″ HD case, the cable does not fit in the pouch. And in this case, the power adapter is also needed.

My problem is not so much of the power adapter, the QCool works without the power adapter but uses both USB power and its internal battery power at the same time. Which could leave one without juice for later photo banking. It may or may not work for longer than 2 hours or even less but nonetheless it works. My problem is with the cable. And this seems to be a problem with just about any so called portable devices with a cable of some sort. The pouch never seems to accommodate the cable or other necessary accessories.

There are some very slick HD cases, like the Momobay for instance, in the market. To have such a thin case, why not house the cable as well within a slightly thicker casing? Simply have a hollow shelf or compartment underneath the case would do. Then the pouch could hold the case which carries the cable.

Maybe I could DIY a shelf underneath the case…

Gargling

When a HKATV TV morning news anchor woman reported this morning about virus attacks within the search engine Google, she pronounced the name as “goggle“.

While all local broadcasting stations have been promoting correct pronunciations for Cantonese Chinese words and deliberately changing many words from their de facto standard of pronunciations to awkward and questionably correct pronunciations, and found to have been recorrecting themselves a while later a few times, they keep inventing new pronunciations for English words… Deep as dip, Twins as chuens, Shine as shy, Jerry as geurry, Janet as Jannette, Jackson as jekson…

Alec PingPonging

Long video in large (warning: 24MB file) WMV format, short video (3MB file) in WMV format, and the same short video in smaller bit rates (1.4MB file) similar to that in the time lapsed photography WMV file posted earlier.

Videos were taken with a Canon IXUS V3 (S230) digital camera in 640×480x15fps mode.

Time Lapsed AVI File

Tin mantioned his Powerbook cannot open WMV files, so…

Here is the same time lapsed photography of Alec that I posted a few days ago in AVI
format.

Bruised Orange

Went to pay for my mom’s cell phone account.

Years ago, Orange accepted payments in all of their outlets. A couple of years ago, they restricted walk-in payments to their service centres only. About a year ago, they closed their Mongkok service centre and started accepting payments in all of their retail outlets again until a couple of months ago.

I just went to Sai Yeung Choi St. in Monkok as usual to make a payment this evening. There used to be an Orange outlet between Soy St. and Dundas St. No more. So I went all the way back to Argyle St to the 3 outlet. Only to find out they no longer accept walk-in payments. The sales told me only Watson’s accept payments and in cash only.

I went all the way back to the Watson’s at Nathan Rd and Nelson St., only to find out they needed the customer number to process the payment, and the phone number would not do.

Orange does not send out invoices and only send out SMS payment reminder messages without the customer number. The Watson’s sales said I could call the *?? number to ask for the customer number. Without my mom’s phone, the *?? number is no good for me.

It is easier to convince mom to switch over to Sunday which has at least 3 full service outlets in the area that I just went thru this evening.

Update (23 July):
A look at their website indicates one can pay by walk-in through any 3Shop or 3 Service Centre or Watson’s with the Argyle St. 3Shop I went to listed. A call to the number listed only to find out it is actually a sales hotline rather than service hotline under the service webpage. I was passed to the customer service line. It rang for a full 10 minutes before I had to answer another incoming call.

I called again (both time took less than a couple of seconds to answer BTW, maybe ’cause it is a sales hotline), and I was passed to the customer service line again. This time it took about 10 seconds to get an answer.

The rep said, yes, they need the customer number regardless of where I make the payment and that the phone number with the name would not do. Which is quite understandable for a Watson’s payment, but even at their shops and service centres?! And no, I cannot make a payment at their Argyle St. shop even with a customer number.

I think a Borg designation of “3rd of 3″ suits them better than just “3″.
