Improvement?!

Toward to end of the first page of the LetsGoDigital review on the Fuji FinePix S3Pro digital SLR camera, it wrote…

“… Another improvement is the flash system, Fujifilm now also uses Nikon’s D-TTL metering. So a so-called DX flash unit is required. …”

The Nikon DX flash/Nikon DSLR body combo is one of the worst, buggiest, and finicky flash setup in the industry.

Ever since Nikon started with DSLR, their flash system has been modified, which requires a new coupling with their DSLR bodies, has never work nearly as well as they did in their film bodies. Problems are under and over exposed properly setup flash photos as well as some photos with the shutter never even opened. Even with manual flash settings where Nikon claimed their DSLRs would work with, never did. I suspect it is a problem with the shutter synchronization.

Coupling with the DX flash system is the worst idea of all time!

Crammed Party

Time-wise, that is.

We had some house guests over yesterday for a cocktail plus dinner party. I had planned on making 6 different kinds of O’dourves, a soup, a mirepoix, and 3 main dishes. Unfortunately, maybe the idea of a cocktail is not so popular here in HK as they are in America, most of of the guests came later in the evening.

Although it took me several days of preparation, for the lack of time both in making the food as well as consuming them left me no choice but to only make 2 O’dourves, a soup, a mirepoix, and just 2 main dishes instead, leaving a whole bunch of grocery in the fridge.

Perhaps I should stick to ordering take-out instead next time we have house guests over.

Damn Drivers

Is it me or is it the customers of the Oxford Road Wellcome supermarket? I was there last night and there was a car there with its engine left on and a couple of passengers inside.

It has been said by drivers in HK leaving their engines on for the air conditioner. Which is a load of crap. If everyone turns of their engines when parked it wouldn’t be so hot to begin with.

This is winter, and I don’t suppose the 18 degree Celsius evening temperature is too hot, or so “freezingly” cold making the heater a necessity! It is also an unpopulated area away from traffic, so pollution other than that car has created itself is not a problem. There is no mosquitoes either.

I’d say we slam down on these aholes before we do anything else to curb the region’s pollution.

Johnny Carson - RIP

The late-night talk show host legend passed away yesterday at the age of 79.

Fake Food

There has been news about fake food or food treated with industrial chemicals almost daily in the last couple of years which makes one wonder what’s proper food.

I have been taking Quaker Instant Oatmeal for over a year totaling several cans now. I’ve just come across a brand new can which I bought from Wellcome that smells a little like a stale rat-infested room.

I don’t want to simply bring it back to Wellcome for an exchange. But should I send it back to Quaker’s distributor or the Consumer Council?

This time is easy when one could smell the problem, but what if the problem can’t be seen, smelled or tasted? Makes me wonder whether one should eat anything for a prolong period of time even for eating something as wholesome as oatmeal.

Update (19/01/05 15:18) : After a call to the distributor, they jotted down the date and place of purchase and they came over this morning and replaced the can for us. Not a bad service. We’ll see how the new can tastes.

More Sunday Biking

Looks like Alec has out grown his bike already. He is now riding with the seat much higher than when he first got this bike. After this set of photos from today before we headed back to the car, we raised his seat another cm higher. Even so, I think there is still room before he reaches the proper riding hight.

The problem is with the gear and crankset though. Since the new crankset is much longer than the original, they might be too long for him to begin with. Also, he is now riding so slow that even a jogger went past us today. He maybe be riding in a comfortable cadence and speed for himself, but I am bored to hell. Luckily the path looks rather safe with family packs along the way that I could do a couple of sprints on the straights without leaving his sight. However, I don’t feel like leaving him behind.

Alec seems to enjoy his ride very much and he said he has no intention in increasing his cadence and speed. So, I am probably stuck with this for another year or so before Alec has grown into a bigger size bike with proper gearing for longer and faster rides.

Restaurant Service

In many restaurants, as soon as you sit down, the waiter hands you the menu and stands there to wait for your decision. Even after you have told the waiter a couple of times to give you a while to decide, he would just stand there until you’ve decided and told him what you want. To some this maybe service. To me, that down right rude.

I may want to take my time to look through the entire menu. I may want to discuss with my party. I may even want to talk about other things before I look through the menu. A glass of water or tea for now would be sufficient, thank you. I don’t mind waiting for a free waiter; I prefer to call for one when I have decided.

Useless Care

I find it extremely frustrating when I have foreseen a problem, pointed it out, yet no one listened, and the event unfolded with the precise problem that I had foreseen. It is doubly frustrating when these people who never listen happen to be those of my dearest grown-ups.

It is not like I have no credibility to them. Time and time and time again and again and again things happened as I had foreseen they would. People have to be so stupid like those aired on the AFHV. These people never learn either. Even when the same situation arose several times, been told several times, they would still do exactly the same way as they had ever done. They rely on chance that one of these times problem would not happen as they so often do.

GDI!
