Plugs for the Gym

It is one thing when you don’t BYOiP (bring your own iPod), and another when you do to the gym with its own music. That is when an isolated earplug works its wonders. Unfortunately, the “nice” cable of the Etymotic ER-4P thumps too much during a workout and therefore not suitable for the occasion. The original Apple’s just can’t cut the background gym music craps (Rain Lee’s “You Don’t Love Me La”, and Chan Siu Chuen’s “Faan Jin”. F!), which drove me up the wall and made me determined to get a less expensive set of earplugs for gym use.

The determination, however, had left me with another dilemma - assymmetric cables. Friends have been saying that there should only be negligible differences if any at all between assymmetric and symmetric cabled earphones. Yet hardly anyone makes a symmetric cabled earplugs. Most of them are earbuds without isolation, not earplugs with isolation. So if I were to get a set, I am pretty well stuck with a set with assymmetric cables.

Upon suggestions by the salesman, I bought a pair of HK$250 Pioneer SE-CL30-J3. TBH, I can’t see anything different other than cosmetic between the Pioneer, Sony and Panasonic ones. Granted the specs are slightly different, but their designs are essentially the same. At least they all have a short main cable and then a long extension cable. That extension alone, if you must use one, is already a minus point.

Anyway, back to the sym and assym cables. Now hear this with your own earplugs and experience the differences if any for yourselves. Make sure you switch sides to different ear and clean out any ear booger before you audition it. Granted, with complex passages while you were busy with other chores like during a jog, there could possibly be no noticeable differences. And true, you may call it placebo or anything - just pick any name for it - unless my Pioneers are faulty, it’s there.

Am I satisfied with the Pioneer? Adequate isolation at home but remains to be tested in the gym. Same old veiled sound with forward, bulgy, muddy and distorted bass one would come to expect from the likes that most of the general public may like, which is OK for Pop, crap for Jazz and Classical. Much better than the 12 year old HK$350 Technics set I had. Not sure if I would trade the originals for them though until I could find a better isolated earplugs for gym use at about the same price with a much flatter frequency response curve. And until then, the originals are still fine during an isolation-is-a-danger kinda situation like street walking, street biking or driving.

One Size Fits All

Means that it does fit anybody. Another one of those Murphy’s Laws. In this case, the words fit the Motorola Rokr rather well.

Motorola CEO Ed Zander is reportedly to have said, “Screw the nano. What the hell does the nano do? Who listens to 1,000 songs?”… “People are going to want devices that do more than just play music, something that can be seen in many other countries with more advanced mobile phone networks and savvy users.

Well Ed, that may be the case. And if the real market truly reflects your way of thinking, you should have been laughing your way to the bank rather than mouthing off your partner’s product.

The truth is, while some consumers do hope for a one-device-does-all product, they want one that does every job as good as separate devices do. No a mediocre one that fails in every way include the original function that the device was meant to do - in case of the Rokr - a phone.

And even then, to what end do we stick more functions into a device? First a wired poor reception radio, then a poor quality VGA camera, then a virus proned PDA that only half the functions work with one phone company and the other half work with another compnay but never a phone company works with all functions, then a MP3 player with just a few very poor quality high compression encoded songs, then what? Two containers that holds a single cigarette and 10 ml of Scotch? How about a lighter to go?

And then there are those customers who would rather show off their new toys every chance they get. They may buy a new phone every 2 moths and a new MP3 player every other month. A new PDA every 6 months and a new digital camera in between. Yeah, there are many of these more freaky people than myself out there would carry a Batman utility belt to carry ‘em all.

I too want a one-device-does-all device. Give me a PDA that works like a secretary where I don’t have to draw every character and wait 2 seconds before I can continue writing another. A 2GB memory 8 MPix digital camera with a 24-100mm f2.0 zoom lens usable ISO800 and does full motion and sound video. A MP3 player with another 4GB memory and plays AAC format sans iTunes, I won’t be buying songs online en route. A RDS radio that can play on the speaker phone without the earphones. A 1 watt torch. Screamer in case of robbery. GPS. 2 day battery. Size of a Nokia 8210. Retails at HKD$5K.

Well… fat chance, I know. 6GB of RAM alone would have cost HKD$4K retail. HKD$5K would not be enough for the rest of the device. However… at HKD$1900 retail for the 4GB nano, that is less than the cost for the RAM alone at retail. That kind of pricing is absolutely better than just about anything! Experiences included, the nano is a dream come true but the Rokr is… I wouldn’t know, I have never owned, used, or even wanted a Motorola phone since… before StarTac.

Back to the many devices for the different occasions.

Them’s the Break

F1 Team Renault driver Fernando Alonso has just secured the World Champion title with 2 races left in the season at Interlargos, Brasil last night. Fernando became the youngest F1 driver ever to hold the title.

It is however not a very good reflection of the talent. Both Team McLaren drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya are clearly the much 2 faster and arguably better drivers but due to many engine failures led them to 2nd and 3rd places in the driver’s standing so far. Yet Team McLaren has just surpassed Team Renault, which is clearly a much more reliable and all round better team than Team McLaren, in the Manufacturer’s title by 2 points so far.

IMO, the Manufacturer’s title should count the number of engine failures against the teams, and time difference won over other drivers should also be added to the scoring for the Driver’s title to better reflect both team’s and driver’s ability. Although admittedly time difference won would be rather difficult to work out with the positional points.

Initial TS

It has been reported that Japanese F1 Team BAR Honda driver Takuma Sato is not interested in role of a test driver since Team BAR Honda has signed with Jenson Button as well as Rubens Barrichello for next year. The report mentioned that it was surprising that Honda, the major owner of BAR would drop the only Japanese F1 driver.

It isn’t surprising to me. TC just isn’t any good as a F1 driver with his Initial D type immature drift driving style. It may have worked on anime TV or in the movies, or even in Rally races but F1 is the real McCoy. Drifting simply isn’t moving forward and that equates to “not fast”.

ER-4P + ER-4P24 Without Amp

I have just received a confirmation from Etymotic that using the ER-4P24 P to S conversion patch cable with the ER-4P earphones or the ER-4S earphones by itself without using a headphone amp would not damage the source equipment or the earphones. The only side effect would be slightly lower volume level and possibly faster draining of the battery (of the iPod).

This is great news for I don’t listen to too loud a volume, with the external noise isolation, the ER-4P with ER-4P24 works out just find. I prefer flatter frequency response of the S over the slight bass and treble boosted P. Had I knew this before the purchase, I would have bought the ER-4S instead. For those of you who don’t care for any distorted bass, but want a more musical presentation yet don’t want to carry a headphone amp around, try direct hookup with your iPod with the ER-4S or add the ER-4P24 patch cable to the ER-4P.

Ever Watch Your Kids Sleep?

AlecD1039adj500.jpg

Not that I was mad at Alec or anything. However, if your kids had made you mad in the day time, talk to your kids and make sure they feel fine before they fall asleep. And then watch them for a moment. I am sure you will feel much matter as well.

I try to spend time as much as I can with Alec everyday and I watch Alec sleeps for a few minutes every night, and I still feel I don’t spend enough time with him, or that his school works left him with not much time with me. Kids grow too fast.

One Sleepy Day

Over slept in the morning. On and off slept through most of the morning and noon, missed lunch, until almost 3pm. Slept from 6:16pm to 7:35pm, had dinner, and then slept from 8:15pm ’til 10:25pm.

I am sure I can still sleep through the night! Maybe I am coming down with a flu or something but I haven’t got any other symptoms.

Dug out my collection of old cassette tape recordings of party music from the ’70’s among other types a couple of days ago and had listened to a couple of those party tapes just now… Man, I’d better get back to sleep.

Dumband

Apple’s Own Product Photo

More of a fashion thingy but rather useless. Saw it on the shalf of a shop last night but come to think of it, at the arm level, the wire of original earphones would be dangling all over making a jog very uncomfortable. Rapping the wire around the band would destroy the look and would be too comfortable on the arm either. In its natural upright position, the earphone jack would be underneath the band making it impossible to take the nano out without disconnecting the earphones. If one do not take the nano out, at arm level one can’t see the display very clearly unless one is extremely short sighted without prescription eyeglasses, in which case don’t go street jogging. One can’t wear it upside down for proper viewing orientation ’cause the nano would fall off the band unless the band is very tightly rapped around the nano, but then it would make the wire even closer to the ears making it even more excessively long.

How about waring it around the wrist like a watch instead with long sleeves stick the wire inside and through the sleeves so it would flap around while one jog…?

Earplugs for iPod

Like I said, I have tried out some isolated earplugs, and here are my findings. Basically, at no extra costs, the original Apple is good for the deal. Unless you are prepared to pay over HKD$1,200 for an extraordinary pair, stick with the original and enjoy the music instead of worrying about the “Hi-Fi”.

That said, I have not tried many earplugs, any non-plug type earphones, or any other types of headphones within the $1200 range, so I can’t say for sure there is nothing else worth trying within. Among the earplugs I have tried though, the Westone UM-1 transparent (newer version), the Etymotic ER-6i, the Westone UM-1 black (older version), and the Etymotic ER-4P, in that order. Of the first three, which are all around HKD$900, IMHO they are all crap with the ER-6i sounded better than the two Westones in a sense of much more controlled high frequencies, yet still loose low frequencies and are therefore worth no where near its price. I ended up buying the $1880 ER-4P.

The P version is for used without a headphone amp. There is also a S version that is supposed to be used with a headphone amp.

With the ER-4P, the sound by itself is a little forward with clean high frequencies, slightly bright mids and slightly boosted lows which are all under good control. This works for most pop music and vocals but not as good with instrumentals, especially with violin and piano Solos or Concertos. Of the Jazz and Classical cuts that I have heard so far, it presented the Instruments somewhat “electronic” like. For those listen primarily to Pop, the ER-4P is great. With the S being spec’ed as a more “flat” frequency response without the intended high end and low end boosts the P does, it might just be the key for Instrumentals. While I have not actually heard the sound of the ER-4S, I have no way of confirming so.

There is however one optional equipment for the ER-4P available. The HKD$380 ER-4P24 “P to S” converter patch cable. This is supposed to make the P into a S. My findings are, since more of an amplification is needed with the converter cable, what were not amplified enough to be any thing significant are now more so amplified to be significant - hence a sense of more “resolution”. While playing with the cable however, I find that even with it on, I am able to get a decent volume with just the iPod nano alone at about an 80% volume setting. And surprisingly, perhaps as the P and the S are spec’ed in which the S has a flat frequency response and without the P’s boosted high end and low end, direct plug-in to the iPod with the converter cable on sounded more natural and less “electronic”! That mellowed out some of the harshness of the ER-4P alone. While I’d prefer such a less forward sound, some may find it not enough “bass” (boosted bass are distortion to me).

Which brings us to another completely different kind of earplug. A non-isolated electrostatic earplug. The Stax SR-001mkII. It comes with its own power supply/amp which is a must for these earphones to work. My friend bought a set so I have the privilege to try them out.

Originally, the shop owner threw in a source to amp cable. We find the cable that came with my earphone amp, the Xenos 0HA which I use it to boost resolutions at low volumes, to be better than the freebie. My friend ended up buying the original Stax cable afterall.

Without the Stax cable, the SR-001mkII set sounds excellent with violins and pianos but a slightly veiled and even more laid back vocals. It does the opposite of what the ER-4P does in which the Stax seemingly tries to “de-electronic” the sound. With a much laid back sound, vocal does not work so well and neither does Pop. Which explains why the SR-001mkII does not have such raved reviews as does the ER-4P. However, it sounded much more musical than the ER-4P does. For those who are looking for boosted punchy bass, look elsewhere. The original Stax cable made it even more so than what the set does by itself with a cheapy cable.

While we have tried out many combinations. Personally, I’d prefer the Stax with Instrumentals and the ER-4P for a more all round music type enjoyment. I think I might prefer the ER-4S even more if the ER-4P with ER-4P24 truly does what the ER-4S does by itself. Since the big outer casing of the Stax hurts my outer ears by pressing too hard against my ear ridges, as much as I like its sound I have no desire to buy one for myself. I’ll keep running in the ER-4P for the moment and might just keep running it with the ER-4P24 en route without an amp for easier carrying convenience.

About isolation earplugs in general, while the isolation does what it is supposed to do, it introduced some problem of its own. When the isolation is too much, one can hear ones own breathing and might even hear ones own pulse if the plugs are too tight. Choosing the perfect size foam or rubber type interchangable plugs for that perfect fit is essential. Too tight, too much breathing sound and very uncomfortable. Too loose, no bass at all.

Perhaps an open type headphone like the Sennheiser PX-100 might be easier and more comfortable to wear but I am not sure which ones sounds so good yet.
