“We are Borg.”

Said Alec, after watching several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, trying to mimic a Borg Drone. As he continued… “You will be stimulated. Resistance is futile.”

He has no idea what all that means. Nor do I, since he put it that way, I suppose.

Nationwide Wi-Fi by Year’s End

No, not here. Singapore.

All while we are still on spots… and not even the Dalmation kind. Much like panhandling – hopping from coffee shop to coffee shop asking for free Wi-Fi access. Oops, sorry, it is only free as the coffee shops don’t charge us for the internet access, but the ISP does. So no, it ain’t free.

For a society who so like to compare itself with that of Singapore’s, just how does it feel to lose every single time? And where is the point in the comparisons when no one really strive to improve anything? We can’t even solve the overloaded-school-bag problem for decades. Or did we even try? We wanted to legislate off police surveillance on crooks, but there is only ask for explanations for Peeping Tom reporters taking photos of celebrities in private places. Oh sure, many of us scream and shout crying foul now but at the end of the day, the bad boys get a slap on the hands and a fine, and then people will forget all about it. Just like the many other times before this one. We solve every problem with a fine or a fee. Sewage, garbage, contaminants, what have you. As long as you’d paid, it’s solved. Nothing else needed nor would be done.

Five Years After 9/11

“Twenty Things We Now Know Five Years After 9/11″.

Qinghai- Tibetan Railway’s First Fatality

Last month’s death of Mr. Hung, a 76 years old Hong Kong man, after suffering from altitude sickness in a trip to Tibet, was kept under wraps. As reported by the Standard.

Perhaps pressurized cabins like airplanes’ should be installed for the faint of hearts.

More of a Reason to

Switch to Mac.

More than USD$200 just for a flicking basic version of an O$!

They’d probably figured that installing that new O$ is more fun than a week with a XBO$.

Enter the Dragon Babe

“She has very, very white skin and marks all over her entire body. I don’t want to think about where they came from.”

The words of the father of an 18 year old girl, who had been kidnapped and missing for the last 8 years, after they have reunited on Wednesday. “She told me: ‘Papa, I love you.’ And her next question was, ‘Papa, do you still have my toy car?’”

I have an 11 year old son. It is stories like this that rips my heart out and makes me want to be a Klignon more than a Vulcan!… Perhaps, I am.

“I can’t be here.”

Took Alec to Pacific Place via MTR for some Triple O’s last night. We walked through the mall for a bit and then we took the MTR back to Temple Street for a walk. Despite all the ooos and arrrs over the toy figures and everything else, Alec kept saying “I can’t be here, I’ve gotta get out of here.”. I think the crowd and the heat got to him. Actually, it wasn’t that bad though.

Alec, with a smile on his face, kept saying, “Hey, these are unauthentic.” and “These are copies!”. The street hockers were not amused.

When I asked him this morning why he didn’t want to be there, he said it was too hot and everything there were copies. He maybe correct but we’d still need to take him out more often.

I am just glad that he missed the vibrators. Or at least, he didn’t say a word when we walked passed them.

More Signs of Old Age

Just received a call from a schoolmate of my HK secondary school who informed me about our class’ 25th anniversary grad reunion this September.

Just yesterday, there were 2 false fire alarms. I escaped one and knowing that it was a faulty smoke detector, I got too lazy to escape the second one. Now I am all sore legs! And that’s from walking 13 floors of stairs. Downstairs, for heaven’s sake!

I am now in need of a pair of reading glasses for the small prints. I can’t even read the calender on my Octopus wristwatch with my naked eyes. Which, coincidently… where the hell did I leave that watch?!

Just A Drive

Went out to Ngam Sung Wai this morning. High “tide” (it’s a river), no birds, very hazy. A hope of shooting some birds turned out to be just a drive.

Not all is lost though. The FM transmitter for iPod listening through the car radio is not all that good. No treble, and no sound intermittently. So I had a after market direct connection add-on unit installed into the stock stereo system yesterday. How it works is that it wired “hijacks” the antenna with a pass through cable and transmit the signal to the radio directly through the antenna cable with everything except the connection cable for the iPod all concealed. Your resulting sound quality would be expected to be only as good as your car radio.

Right after the installation, the installer tested it with a CD unit since I didn’t have my iPod with me at the time. The sound was surprisingly good. It has better bass and treble than the radio itself. There is essentially no difference in listening to the MD, the CD changer, the radio, or the iPod (or anything with a 3.5mm mini jack) through this FM modulator, sans the quality of the source itself.

I drove through the To Lo Highway to Ngam Sung Wai and then through the Tuen Mun Highway back. There were very slight intermittent interference though out the To Lo Highway but zero interference all the way though the Tuen Mun Highway. I suspect that the frequency that I chose, which is FM 87.7, is very close to an actual radio station’s frequency in the Taipo area but not in the Tuen Mun area. This is actually much better than any radio station reception along both highways, so I am very satisfied with it.

The cost of HKD$1700, with a power cable that can charge the iPod, is no small fee but it works, and I don’t have to replace the stock head unit and destroy the aesthetic of the car interior with a neon sign like head unit in doing so.

Well, the Stax SRS-2050II electrostatic ear speakers that I am tempted to get would now have to wait for at least another month.
