Is It Dangerous to Ride a Bicycle in HK?

It is very dangerous if you don’t follow the driving regulations.

Like England, we drive on the left side of a bidirectional road here in HK. Slow cars drive on the leftmost lane. Bicycles are slower than cars, so naturally one should ride on the leftmost lane of the same direction unless you need to turn right. Bike riders should not follow the way motorcyclists ride their motorcycles, a bicycle can never go as fast as a motorcycle.

In HK, riding on sidewalks are strictly prohibited, especially in the city. Not so enforced in the country side in the New Territories. The trouble with riding on the streets is that there are way too many traffic lights in the metro areas making bike riding a very unenjoyable experience. Pollution from motor vehicles is also very bad. On the other hand, riding on the streets in the New Territories is much fun; however, in HK, none of the highways or bridges allow bicycle riding at all. Some bridges may not even allow walking. So be very careful at any intersections or highway entrances. Be on the look out for the highway section signs.

Most bicycle accidents in HK are riding too fast, running red lights and not following driving regulations. Another common mistake is entering roundabouts, most bike riders get into the roundabout on the fast lane heading straight through the roundabout cutting corner without yielding to on going traffic already within the roundabout.

Another common mistake by cyclist is that their bikes don’t have proper lighting. A constantly on red rear light and a constantly on white front light is required at night. Flashing light is not allowed but not to strictly enforced. Supposedly, a bike must also have white front and red rear reflectors but if you have a proper lighting it may be OK. It really depends on the police officer.

If you follow all the proper hand signalling, shoulder checks, stopping at intersections, and the rest of the driving regulations it is usually quite safe to ride on the streets of HK.

Which Phone Next?…

HTC Desire – too plasticy
Motorola Droid X – NA in HK, nicest looking, but no frontal camera
Motorola ST720 – NA in HK, Xenon flash, ugly
Samsung Galaxy S – ugly as iPhone, no flash of anykind
iPhone 4 – outrageously expensive, lousy as a phone

Hey GWB,

do you even know which way is up?

Germany Engineering

While both V8 engines are normally aspirated, there is a difference between good German engineering and poor German engineering where it were made over 50% larger for a miserable 8.7% more power. Even at its original 510bhp, it is still only 23% more power.

Hey, Mr. Stutter Lee!

DON”T PATRONIZE THE PEOPLE! Your IQ is not high enough.

Even if you truly didn’t know your dad was in on the purchase of your telecom like you said you didn’t, he would have had known you were selling it, alright!!!

A Load of Crap

I have just received the following message from eBay via email…

Dear eBay Community Member,

I’m writing to let you know that your account have been indefinitely suspended from eBay because our records indicate your account was involved in activities that violate our policy governing seller non-performance.

If you feel you have been suspended in error or want to appeal this decision by providing additional information, please click here .

An email regarding this was sent to your email address on file with eBay.

Thank you for using eBay and we look forward to many more successful transactions!

Sincerely,

I have had my eBay account for several years and I have never made any buy or sell transactions whatsoever. Not even a single bitting or listing of any kind. I can’t even remember my account name or password for that matter. This message, legit or not, is the very reason why I’d never trade on eBay and the likes. But I suppose my mere in-activeness could be classified as “seller non-performance”.

Bang Your Head Against the Wall

until it stops hurting. That’s what it feels like talking to dad.

A conversation with dad as he was trying to find a song or an album that contains the country oldie and had me typing out a song list that he collected by consolidating his Karaoke selection from different Karaoke discs….

Dad: Can you buy the song XYZ which you had searched and found through iTunes?

Me: Not unless we have a foreign credit card but even then, it plays on computers fine but there’s no guarantee that it would work with all MP3 players or CD players.

Dad: Forget it then, I’ll just find it at HMV.

Me: But we could still search which album exactly that contains the song so we HMV could place an order for it.

Dad: No, it’ll be in HMV.

Me: If you don’t know the album or the artist’s name, HMV’s staff may not be able to find it.

Dad: Nah, HMV will have it; as long as I go over, even I could find it.

Me: How do you plan to search for a single song only by it’s name? And even if you did find it how do you know it is the version you wanted as it could be fast, slow, male vocal, female vocal or even just music only?

Dad: It wouldn’t matter, I know how to sing the song anyway..

Me: (While typing the list) Hey isn’t this the song? You already have it!

Dad: Yeah but that’s just a Karaoke.

Me: So?

Dad: I don’t know how it’s sung.

Hauh?!

This is just one of many similar daily conversations with dad.

Pointless LEGCO Member

In response to the government’s plan to increase the deduction amount of drivers’ points for those who run red lights in order to reduce traffic accidents, LEGCO member Chan Wai Yip have reserves to the plan explaining that any rules that potentially affect professional drivers should be considered much more carefully.

Hey, simply DON’T run any red lights and no amount of penalty would affect anyone. I’d say let’s increase the cash penalty to HKD$10,000 for each offend as well to really slam down on reckless drivers, professional or otherwise.

The New BMW of Cell Phone

The Nokia 7260

Ugly as hell, just like the newer BMW’s.

And yes, I am both BMW and Nokia fan.

Bouns

When one views “Chinese” DVD-9 discs, one gets “bouns“.

Sometimes colorful artistic digital squares. Sometimes automatic digital freeze frames. Sometimes 2 Mandarin audio tracks when 1 Cantonese and 1 Mandarin audio track were clearly printed on the cover. Sometimes subtitles that has absolutely nothing to do with the movie on the disc whatsoever. But more appropriately, when one is really lucky, one also gets the “extra” clips that come as bonus with the original legit disc which are listed as “bouns” on the disc menu.

That’s what we get when we borrow those discs.
